Project Background

Community Engineering Corps is providing technical assistance to a community in rural Maryland that is struggling with public health challenges related to inadequate sanitation and unsafe drinking water. The community is faced with widespread failing individual septic systems and shallow, contaminated wells located in close proximity to failing wastewater infrastructure. A minimum of eight houses are currently facing immediate health risks, though recent data collection efforts suggest the challenges are widespread throughout the region. Technical assistance providers from the EPA are supporting wastewater needs and investigating long term solutions but a volunteer team is needed to address drinking water concerns.

Description of Community:

A large portion of the Charles County community struggles with drinking water and wastewater challenges due to a historic lack of investment and support. Many households are underserved and overburdened, lacking access to basic sanitation and water services. Many families have lived in the community for generations.

Project Scope of Work:

It is anticipated that Community Engineering Corps’ long-term involvement with this community will include the development of a Preliminary Engineering Report for drinking water solutions. The Preliminary Engineering Reports are anticipated to be utilized in applications for federal and state funding opportunities for capital improvement projects.
