A Path Forward
In communities across the country, one of the biggest challenges to improving infrastructure is securing the necessary funding. Many projects are complex, spanning from initial planning to final implementation, and often lack sufficient financial resources to address urgent needs, particularly in underserved areas.
In the small borough of Foxburg, nestled in rural western Pennsylvania, residents faced a pressing infrastructure issue: a road had deteriorated to a point that it endangered pedestrians, while stormwater runoff threatened nearby homes. With a population of around 150, many of whom are low-income, Foxburg had struggled for years to improve its crumbling infrastructure, but the financial support needed to bring their plans to fruition remained elusive.
The turning point came when Karen Best, the borough secretary, secured a grant aimed at subsidizing some of the much-needed infrastructure upgrades. However, the funds were insufficient to cover the complete scope of road improvements. Compounding the issue, the grant provider required an engineering study before any milling and repaving could commence, leaving the community in a challenging position without the budget to fund this essential analysis.
Determined to find a solution, Karen reached out to a volunteer team from Community Engineering Corps. This collaboration brought together dedicated professionals and students, who worked closely with the residents of Foxburg. Their collective efforts resulted in comprehensive designs and the engineering documentation required to secure the necessary funding for the project.
This partnership exemplifies the resilience of the Foxburg community and their commitment to addressing local infrastructure needs. By uniting their efforts with Community Engineering Corps, the residents were able to navigate the complexities of securing funding and selecting the right contractor for construction. Ultimately, they transformed a long-standing community concern into a successful resolution.
“Community Engineering Corps went above and beyond at all times for us,” Karen expressed. “I would just like to say how very thankful and appreciative we are that your group responded and led us through this maze of a project.”
Foxburg's story serves as an inspiring example for other communities grappling with similar challenges, highlighting the importance of community collaboration and perseverance in overcoming infrastructure hurdles.
